Industrial Air Filter Selection Guide
Industrial air filters are designed to remove unpleasant odors and particulates from the air, enhancing the air quality of the surrounding environment. They come in various types of manufacturing products and can be applied across multiple industrial sectors, such as the semiconductor industry, pharmaceutical industry, food industry, steel industry, precision industry, electronics industry, hospitals, laboratories, and spray booths.
AHU (Air Handling Units) vs. MAU (Make-up Air Units)
In addition to industrial air filters, air filters used in household and cartridge-type AC furnaces, as well as HEPA mini-pleated panel filters, are widely applied indoors and in vehicles. However, the key distinction is that industrial filters are primarily used in AHU (Air Handling Units) and MAU (Make-up Air Units) systems to eliminate pollutants and odors in industrial building areas.
HEPA filter media are typically made of fiberglass, whereas household air filters or automotive filters are mainly made of synthetic fibers. Considering the lower airflow in indoor air purifiers and vehicles, HEPA filters are often composed of a combination of polyester and electrostatic filter media. This blend attracts and captures airborne particles, achieving the efficiency required for HEPA filters.
Generally speaking, industrial filters are categorized into primary, intermediate, and final/cleanroom high-efficiency filters. These classifications are based on the type, advantages, and applications of the filters, defined as follows.
Primary Air Filters
Primary filtration (also known as pre-filtration) is typically installed in the first stage of filtration to capture larger particles before reaching the HEPA filter. This helps reduce the load on the HEPA filter by trapping larger particles, thereby extending its lifespan.
Filter Types:
- Cardboard Frame Panel Pleated Filter
- These filters are designed to capture larger particles. They are low-cost, easy to install, and widely used in residential areas and all types of ventilation systems.
- All-Aluminum and Stainless Steel Filters
- These filters are robust and durable, easy to clean, cost-effective, and have an extended lifespan. They provide an economical and efficient solution for industrial air filtration.
Filter Media Rolls:
A. Polyester Filter Media: This media is composed of 100% polyester bonded fibers, creating a random filter fiber structure to capture dust and lint. It is used as a substitute for fiberglass filters in initial filtration applications.
B. Fiberglass Filter Media: Fiberglass is widely used in industrial applications to maintain air quality and remove odors in spray booth workshops, as well as to prevent paint overspray.
Secondary (Medium Efficiency) Air Filters
Medium efficiency filters are applied in the second stage of filtration to remove fine dust particles from exhaust air. They capture dust, pollen, and bacteria that primary filters cannot, and are made from synthetic fibers. This stage of filtration also helps reduce the number of large particles reaching the HEPA filter, thereby extending its service life.
Product Features:
- Captures large particles, as well as mold spores, smoke, and unpleasant odors.
- High efficiency with low pressure drop.
- Suitable for all types of HVAC systems or gas turbine intakes, and widely used in hospitals, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, food industries, laboratories, and cleanrooms.
Filter Types:
- Medium Efficiency Cardboard Frame Panel Pleated Filters
This medium efficiency filter is durable with a large filtration area, maintaining excellent filtration performance even in high humidity. It effectively reduces fiber shedding with high dust-holding capacity using synthetic and fiberglass filter media, supported by a sturdy expanded metal mesh that minimizes particulate release from the output side. The reinforced metal expansion mesh on the output side is securely bonded to the frame, preventing air leakage and remaining intact under tension and vibration.
- ASHRAE Synthetic Rigid Cell Filters
This medium-high efficiency filter is durable and features a large filtration area, maintaining excellent filtration performance even in high humidity. Made with fine synthetic fiber filter media with superior dust-holding capacity, it is reinforced with a sturdy expanded mesh structure to effectively reduce particulate release on the outlet side. This makes it an ideal alternative to traditional fiberglass high-efficiency products. - ASHRAE V-Bank Filters
This type of filter is suitable for various turbulent airflow and humid environments and can be used in a wide range of air handling unit systems. The V-bank design provides a larger filtration area, reducing airflow resistance and lowering pressure drop. It is ideal for environments requiring high dust-holding capacity or large airflow, which helps reduce energy consumption. This filter type is compatible with diverse turbulent airflow and humid conditions and can be applied in various air handling units and intake systems of gas turbines in power plants. - Celling FIlter HF-600G
Made of high-strength synthetic fibers that resist breakage, this filter utilizes an advanced progressive multi-layer structure to ensure high dust-loading capacity and low pressure drop, reducing mechanical energy consumption and enhancing cost-effectiveness. A special adhesive is evenly applied to the filter surface to prevent dust penetration caused by minor vibrations. The filter media, made from high-performance, break-resistant non-woven synthetic fibers, is suitable for various HVAC systems, paint booths, and coating facilities for bicycles, motorcycles, and baking paint factories. Its progressively layered structure increases fiber density in the direction of clean air flow, improving filtration efficiency and extending the filter’s service life. Reinforced with a grid on the outlet side, this structure strengthens the filter material and guides air distribution for an even laminar flow effect.
- Medium Efficiency Bag Filters
The medium-high efficiency filter is made of synthetic fiber media and assembled with ultrasonic welding and a galvanized iron frame. The seams of the filter bag are designed to retain flexibility to accommodate various conditions during filtration. This bag-type filter maintains excellent filtration efficiency while keeping pressure drop low.
High-Efficiency/HEPA Air Filters
High-efficiency filters are designed to capture very fine particles in the air. They are widely used in HVAC systems, such as those in hospitals, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, the food industry, laboratories, electronics, and clean rooms. Filtration efficiency ranges from 95%@DOP (E10) to 99.999%@DOP (ULPA).
HEPA Aluminum Separator HEPA Filter
This filter controls laminar airflow in high-humidity environments. It is suitable for high-humidity settings and provides laminar control, with low initial pressure drop for extended service life, and UL900 certification, meeting stringent fire resistance standards. High-temperature-resistant HEPA filters are also available; this filter removes various airborne contaminants and serves as a final-stage filter.
HEPA Disposable HEPA Filter
This filter, with an efficiency of MPPS ≥ 99.95%, uses fine pleated filter material. It can be designed with adjustable dampers to balance airflow distribution, extending its lifespan. It includes anti-vibration holes and a 2.0-inch duct connection diameter to reduce installation time and ensure a tight fit. The low-pressure drop design helps reduce energy consumption.
FFU Fan Filter Units
The Fan Filter Unit (FFU) is an air circulation and filtration device that combines a blower and a high-efficiency filter (HEPA/ULPA). This fan unit reduces energy loss caused by low-pressure drop. By adjusting the motor speed to control airflow (three-speed turbo fan), it significantly supports laminar flow in clean rooms and easily achieves cleanroom standards in modular systems.
